2002 Miss UGA Pageant Information

The Road to Miss America..... 

The Miss University of Georgia Scholarship Pageant is sponsored annually by the Student Government Association and is a preliminary pageant for the Miss America Organization.

The Miss America Organization provides contestants with the opportunity to pursue their professional and educational goals through the awarding of monetary grants for education. The Organization is the single largest source of scholarship money for women in the entire world. Last year over $38 million in grants was available to young women at the local, state and national levels of the Pageant.

The Miss University of Georgia awards a total of $2,500 in scholarships to the top five finalists each year as well as a "People's Choice" scholarship based on audience contributions. The winner of the Miss University of Georgia Pageant will represent the University throughout the year at speaking and entertainment engagements and will compete for the title of Miss Georgia in Columbus, Georgia in June.

Who is Miss University of Georgia or Miss America?.....

The Miss America judging system is unique in its ability to select individuals who represent the best of America's women; women who can be role models for other women and who care about their role and other women's roles in the world today.

Miss University of Georgia, like Miss America, is a woman who has accomplished something meaningful and has the qualities it takes to be successful. Over the years, each Miss University of Georgia has spoken in her own way and time, to social issues, problems, personal values and interests, and is noted for significant individual contributions and career successes. And still, each Miss University of Georgia is a vibrant, concerned woman, accepting the challenges for today and possessing even more exciting dreams for tomorrow. The Dream of Miss America.

Contestants Make a Difference......

Each year contestants such as those involved in the Miss University of Georgia Pageant complete over 450,000 hours of community service for nearly 12,000 different causes and charities. Miss America herself travels over 20,000 miles each month and Miss Georgia travel about 48,000 miles annually in support of their platforms with speeches almost every day. They become a powerful voice which lends itself to all-American charities looking for advocacy, support and recognition.

Who can compete in the Miss University of Georgia Pageant?

The Miss University of Georgia Scholarship Pageant is open to any UGA woman who:

  • has completed one previous semester at The University of Georgia
  • is enrolled as a full-time student at the time the application is submitted
  • is enrolled as a full-time student at the time the pageant is held
  • has a cumulative GPA of 2.3 or higher
  • is between the ages of 17 and 24
  • is a citizen of the United States
  • meets character criteria as set forth by the Miss America Organization
  • is in reasonably good health to meet the job requirements
  • must meet the time commitment and job responsibilities of Miss University of Georgia

When is the Miss University of Georgia Pageant Held?

The Miss University of Georgia Pageant is held each year in early January.

If you cannot download and print these materials, applications and general information packets are available at the Information Desk in the Tate Student Center beginning August 13, 2001 and must be returned to the Pageant Advisor on a specified date in early November.

What is Involved in Competition?

Each contestant in the Miss University of Georgia Pageant will compete in four phases of competition:

Private Interview- Contestants will have a private twelve-minute interview with a panel of judges. Included in the interview is a 30 second introduction followed by 10 minutes of questions from the judges and a 90 second follow-up by the contestant. The interview will count 30 percent of the overall score.

Swimsuit- This phase of competition will highlight posture and physical fitness. From the beginning of her introduction to the end of her walk-turn, the swimsuit competition should not exceed 20 seconds. Contestants will have a choice of a one or two piece swimsuit. The swimsuit cannot be a thong or bikini. Good taste should prevail. Contestants may compete either barefoot or in shoes/sandals. The swimsuit competition will count 15 percent of the overall score.

Evening Wear/On Stage Question- Contestants will wear evening wear (pants, cocktail dress or traditional evening gown) for this phase of competition. Each contestant will be asked to respond to two on-stage questions, one of a general nature and one from their platform or fact sheet. After answering the question the contestant will model for the judges. This phase of competition will count 15 percent of the overall score.

Talent- Contestants will have two minutes to perform a talent of their choice. Taped accompaniment is acceptable or the contestant may present an original work or play a musical instrument. The talent competition will count 40 percent of the overall score. The use of dangerous objects, animals, and excessively large props are not permitted. The removal of clothing is also not allowed.

What is the time commitment and expense to compete?

The Miss University of Georgia Pageant generally requires about ten to twelve hours of rehearsal and group preparation time, spread out over several weeks with the majority of time coming the day before and the day of competition.

There is no entry fee for competition. However, the Miss University of Georgia Pageant accepts contestant sponsors which allow individuals or businesses to support a contestant and receive incentive rewards, priority seating, etc. Contestants are encouraged to minimize expenses by wearing outfits from previous engagements or borrowed outfits. The Miss University of Georgia Pageant is committed to the philosophy of women looking great without spending a lot of money.

The Miss University of Georgia Pageant Committee....

The Pageant Committee is made up of volunteers representing all types of students...Student Government representatives, sororities, fraternities, band members, residence hall assistants, and students willing to get involved. Committee members with special skills and a willingness to invest their time is very valuable to the Miss University of Georgia/Miss America Organization.

Students who are interested in becoming involved in a program to help young women build confidence, friendships, and lifelong memories as well as obtain academic scholarships are welcome to join the Miss University of Georgia Pageant Committee.
